The following abstracts are from the 1996 book by Michael Martin Farmer entitled "Wilkes County, Georgia, Deed Books A-VV, 1784-1806" .


  • April 19, 1787, Thomas Wooldridge, Joseph Terry Davis and Gibson Wooldridge are noted in the estate documents of George WaltonGeorge & William Dooley's names are also noted as is the name of Col. Robert Anderson of SC, p.103

    (This does not appear to be the George Walton that was the Governor of Georgia who died in 1804 in Augusta.)

  • July 20, 1787, Absalom Davis, Sr. sold a slave to Wiley Davis, Sr.  Witnesses were Thomas Woolendge (Wooldridge) and Joseph T. Davis, proved by Absalom Davis, Jr., p.71

  • April 4, 1788, Gibson Wooldridge is noted on a land transaction between John Cunningham and Abel Tatum on Soap Creek, land granted to Cunningham on March 15, 1787, p.151

  • April 4, 1788, Gibson Wooldridge witnessed a land transaction where John Cunningham and his wife Anne sold 300 acres to George Dooley, p.275

  • August 1789, Wiley Davis is listed as an adjacent landowner to William Daniel on Beaverdam Creek., p.134

  • August 26, 1791, Gibson Woodridge bought 200 acres of land at a Sheriff's Sale that was formerly the property of Daniel Johnson, adjacent to George Dooley, p.179

  • January 21, 1792, Wylie Davis is listed as an adjacent landowner to Moses Tullis on "branch of Mill Creek", George Dooley is also listed, p. 347

  • October 20, 1792, Wooldridge is listed as an adjacent landowner to George Dooley on Mill Creek .  The land sold was originally granted to John Cunningham in August 20, 1784, p.273

  • October 27, 1792, Gibson Wooldridge is noted as a Justice of the Peace in a land transaction, p.372

  • November 8, 1792, Molly Davis is noted as one of the executors of the estate of Augustine Davis, p.353

  • August 27, 1794, Gibson Wooldridge is noted as a Justice of the Peace on a land transaction, p.386

  • February 17, 1795, Gibson Wooldridge is listed as a witness on a land transaction on Mill Creek, p.403

  • February 24, 1795, Gibson Wooldridge is noted as a Justice of the Peace on an estate document for Mary Phair, widow of Edward Phair, p.406

  • April 27, 1795, Lewis Davis was a witness to a land transaction between Sanders Walker and William Sutton, land on Buffalo Creek, p.435

  • There are several records with the name Lewis C. Davis but this Lewis is likely Lewis Cookson Davis, relationship unknown to Absalom Davis.  There are also several records with the name Richard Davis but the relatioship, if any, to Absalom Jackson is not known.

VOLUME I

  • November 5, 1777, Gideon Davis is a witness to the Will of Jacob Colson

  • June 19. 1785, Gideon Davis' land on Falling Creek is noted, p.237

  • August 6, 1785, Augustine Davis is noted as an adjoining land owner of John Patterson in Washington County, p.259

  • July 20, 1787, Absalom Davis sold a slave to Wiley Davis.  Witnesses were Thomas Wooldridge and Joseph P Davis, p.271

  • Dec. 31, 1787, Gibson Wooldridge and his wife Lucy sold land on Soap Creek, p.280
    Note: Could this Lucy Wooldridge be a daughter of Absalom Davis, Sr.?

  • Jan. 10, 1788, Joseph Davis (Blacksmith) bought land from John Cook on Rocky Comfort Creek.

  • 1803 Land Lottery, Wiley Davis received 1 draw and Richard Davis received 2 draws,  p.319

  • No date listed, Richard Davis noted in a case, p.169

The following abstracts are from the 2014 book by Lois Helmers entitled "Early Records of Franklin County, Georgia". 

  • December 26, 1787, Lewis Davis witnessed a land transaction on Nail's Creek.  This appears to be the land originally granted to John Rose by Governor Samuel Hart, p.10

  • December 8, 1791, Wiley Davis and John Cunningham (J.P.) witnessed a land transaction in Franklin County between Edward McGarrey and Henry Shackleford both of Elbert County, p.40

  • June 20, 1792, Gideon Davis and wife Mildred of Elbert County conveyed land to John Naile of Franklin County.  Part of a tract originally granted to Gideon Davis by Governor George Handley* in 1788.  Land noted to be on Estanollee Creek (also named Gum Log Creek).  Witnessed by John Cunningham, J.P., p.44
    *Interesting fact: Gov. Handley was a Lt-Col of the 1st GA Regiment in 1776 then later became President of the GA. Constitutional Convention in 1789.  He married a niece of Gen. Samuel Elbert.

  • September 15, 1792, Cheshire (likely Chesley) Davis witnessed a land transaction on the North Fork of the Oconee River in Franklin County, p.86

  • February 27, 1810, James Terrell, former Sheriff of Franklin County, conveys to James Lawson, 250 acres of land originally granted to Gideon Davis, p.204

The following are likely transactions for Lewis Cookson Davis and Lewis L. Davis, unknown relationship to Absalom Davis.

  • Dec. 16, 1799, Lewis C. Davis is apptd. as a temporary administrator for the estate of William Scudder, p.139

  • Feb. 24, 1800, Lewis C. Davis is noted in a case as providing security, p.137

  • April 7, 1802, Lewis C. Davis petitions as administrator for the estate of William Scudder, p.146

  • March 14, 1805, heirs of Lewis C. Davis, land on Fishing Creek in Lincoln and Wilkes Counties is noted, p.149

  • Sept. 11, 1806, Lewis C. Davis is noted in the Will of John Anderson, p.80
  • 1832 Lottery, orphans of Lewis L. Davis noted, p.352

  • Absalom Davis has 9 slaves and 400 acres (5-1/2 polls); Absalom Jr and Joseph Davis both listed with 1 poll; all in Capt. Walker's district, p.23
    Note: Elijah Clarke is listed on the same page with 5 slaves and thousands of acres

  • Wiley Davis, 1 poll, located in Capt. Augustine Davis' district, p.60
    Note: A Gibson Wooldridge and a Thomas Wooldridge are also listed on the same page – Did Absalom Davis, Sr.'s daughter Lucy married Gibson Wooldridge?

  • Lewis Davis, 1 poll, 5 slaves, 550 acres, located in Capt. Nail's district, p.45

  • Richard Davis, 3-1/2 polls, located in Capt. McCain's district, p.49

  • Dec. 25, 1794, Richard Davis received his legacy from the estate of Daniel Grant, p.231

  • January 29, 1807, Wiley Davis is noted in the estate records of William Kelly, p.248

  • July 29. 1790, Lewis C. Davis, listed as a witness to a transaction of George Hyde.  Also listed are James Cunningham and Patrick Cunningham, p.87

  • Lewis C. Davis was listed as an appraiser for the estate of Joseph Moore (1800?), p.266

  • Lewis C. Davis listed in the 1812 estate returns of Nathan Ballard as guardian of Edny Ballard, p.204

  • September 10, 1818, Lewis L. Davis married Louisa T. Irvin, p.333

  • Lewis L. Davis is one of the executors for the estate of John Johns, p.140
