Maternal Families

List of Maternal Family Surnames

According to Ancestry.com, my mtDNA results indicate my maternal ancestry is 37% England, Wales and Northern Europe, 12% Scotland, and 1% Finland.  This is not an exact science because Ancestry.com is constantly updating this as more and more people are added to their database.

Just before and during the American Revolution, many of my maternal family ancestors lived along the Tugaloo River (beginning of the Savannah River) in the Pendleton District of SC and later in Franklin County, GA - just across the Tugaloo River.  In the 1700s, this was the edge of the frontier for white European settlers.  They were mostly Virginians, North Carolinians and South Carolinians who were veterans of the Revolutionary War and they were awarded bounty land for their service (after several treaties with the native American Indians were signed and their lands ceded).  These ancestors were Blair, Verner, Guest, Ledbetter, Harrison, and Wilkinson.  Other maternal ancestors lived farther south along the Savannah River and its tributaries.  These families were Pettigrew, Mayson, Wansley, Bailey, Cunningham, and Davis and they too were veterans of the American Revolution.  I also have a couple of German ancestors from "Dutch Fork" (Deutsche Fork) near Laurens, South Carolina (Kesler & Miller).

My mother was a Blair and our Blair family remained in Franklin County, Georgia until the 1980s.

I have opted to NOT put my family tree online due to privacy concerns.  If you contact me personally, I will let you know my relationship to any of these families/individuals.  I can also provide individualized family tree charts to close cousins - again please contact me.
