1. Samuel P. Hollis - (b. 1824-?) - Married 1) Amanda Johns 1843, 2) Emily (lnu); Confederate soldier, 19th GA Regiment, Company L, captured August 19, 1864 and sent to the POW camp at Point Lookout, MD, exchanged Sept. 18, 1864. Died after 1860 census.
Some researchers claim that Samuel P. Hollis is a son of Thomas M. Hollis but this is unlikely for several reasons. One important document that probably proves this is the 1857 Campbell County tax digest below where Elias acted as the agent for a land transaction for Samuel. We also have the censuses to examine which indicate that Elias had a son Samuel's age - Thomas M. Hollis did not.
Samuel's son William Travis Hollis later lived in White County, Arkansas with his wife Missouri Ann Neely. William and Missouri had sons John William "Tuck" Hollis (1883-1959) and Thomas Martin Hollis and both of them share a facial familiarity with my own Hollis ancestors.
The facial resemblance of these two Hollis men to my own immediate Hollis ancestors is apparent.
2. Reuben B. Hollis - (b. 1832 - 1863) Married Elizabeth Pannell in 1850; Confederate soldier, 22nd AL Infantry, Co. G; He died at Chickamauga on September 20, 1863. He may be buried in a mass grave at the Oakland Cemetery in Atlanta, the Confederate Cemetery in Marietta, GA or any number of smaller cemeteries around Chattanooga.
3. Green B. Hollis - (b. 1833 - d. 1880-1910) Married Eliza Watson in 1854, buried Chulafinnee, Cleburne County, Alabama
4. James J. Hollis - (b. 1836 - d. 1922) Married Rowana Foster Perryman; Confederate solder, 2 GA Cavalry, Co. I; Enlisted at Palmetto, GA on April 23, 1862. Served as a Marshall for Douglas County, GA. Received an "Indigent Soldier's Pension" as an elderly and infirm man in 1906 & 1907 while living in Douglasville, GA. Died Dec. 3, 1922. Children: James Alexander Hollis, Robert Lee Hollis, Theopolis E. Hollis, Emma and Ada.
1. James A. Hollis was a 38 year veteran of the Atlanta Police Department when he died in 1930 - he served as a Lieutenant from 1922 until his death.
2. Theopolis E. Hollis appears to have worked as a printer. In lived in Atlanta and Fort Myers Florida where he was a typesetter and operated the printing presses for local newspapers. He died at the Colorado Springs (Colorado) Union Printers home in 1940 (probably of TB).
5. Moses L. Hollis - (b. 1838- d. 1862) Married Priscilla/Sillia (lnu but probably Perryman), Confederate soldier, 2 GA Cavalry, Co. I; Enlisted at Palmetto, GA on April 23, 1862; died July 23, 1862 in Campbell County, GA
6. William B. Hollis - (b. 1841 - d. after 1860)
One interesting document that I found names an ELIZA HOLICE. Eliza is listed on the 1859 Campbell County tax book with 2 orphans. She most likely belongs to Elias' family in some fashion since she is shown living in the same district and the only Eliza/Elizabeth found is the wife of Green Berry Hollis but they were still married in 1859 and he lived for many more years.
My speculation on this is that she is the wife of Green Berry Hollis and for some legal reason she is paying tax on land for herself and the 2 minor children of her deceased parents. Looking then at the 1860 census, Green's household now shows 2 Watson family members living with them - possibly the 2 orphans noted.
Another possible interesting family association is the name of Elias Pannell shown living with Elias Hollis on the 1850 census. Elias later married Susan Shelnutt. The Shelnutt family is another South Carolina Palatine German family that I am related to - The Schieldnicht/Schieldknicht family was phonetically spelled as Shelnutt in the USA. I have not yet researched Susan Shelnutt's history but there is a William Shelnutt shown on the 1830 census for Campbell County living fairly close to Elias.
CENSUSES
Elias can be found in Campbell County, GA on the 1830, 1840, 1850 and 1860 censuses. By 1866 he is living in Randolph County, Alabama and he is shown on the 1870 census for Fox Creek, Township 18, Randolph County. He apparently died before the 1880 census was taken where his widow is shown living with her son Oliver and his family in Halpin District, Randolph County.
It is apparent that some of the children shown on these censuses are not Elias' but probably his grandchildren. Also, Samuel P. Hollis is likely his son and he might be the son age 15-19 shown on the 1840 census. Samuel is shown on the 1850 census for Campbell County District 10, age of 26.
I have found nothing to show a close familial connection between Elias and his descendants and my ancestor Rufus Hollis or his his descendants. The only close geographical connection is Elias' son James J. Hollis who lived very close to my great grandfather (John William Hollis) in Douglasville - they are buried very close to one another in the Douglasville City Cemetery.
