Isaac Knighton Hollis

The graves of Isaac and his wife have supposedly been located in Alabama at the old Mt. Pisgah Methodist Church cemetery near Wedowee in Randolph County. [1]  The dates for his birth and death have been estimated as 1789 and 1886.

Isaac is not indicated on the 1810 census as a head of household so he probably was living with his parents (Elijah and Alsey) in Fairfield District, SC.

The 1820 census for Fairfield District, SC shows Isaac with 2 males under age 10.  We know that his son Elijah V. Hollis was born in 1818 because Elijah's grave has definitively been located in Griffin, GA with a marker indicating his birth and death dates.  Two other sons are Moses Knighton Hollis and George Washington Hollis who were born in 1828 and 1836, respectively. Moses' grave has been found but we have corroborating proof by of their ages by looking at the 1850 and 1860 censuses.  Both Moses K. and George W. served in the Confederacy and George W. died as a result of wounds received at Gettysburg.

The 1830 census for Fairfield District, SC shows Isaac with 1 male age under 5, 1 male 10-14 and 1 male 15-19.  The male under age 5 is probably Moses Knighton Hollis and Elijah V. Hollis is the one age 10-14.   This leaves one male age 15-19 unaccounted for.

By 1840, Isaac had moved to Chambers County, AL and the census for him indicates one male under 5, one male 5-9, one male 10-14 and two males 15-19.  So, these males do not match the males that were indicated on the 1830 census: Clearly, there is an additional male age 15-19 that isn't accounted for.

Still in Chambers County, AL when the 1850 census was taken we have 4 males: Elijah 20, Isaac 21, George 14 and John 12.  These ages don't exactly match the earlier censuses.

Isaac married Elizabeth Hughes and they had the following known children:
