James Hollis of Union District South Carolina

James Hollis is another Revolutionary War soldier that settled in the same general area of South Carolina as the descendants of John Hollis of Fairfax, VA.   James appears to have lived near the present day towns of Union, Cross Keys and Whitmire.  This area is just to the east of where the John Hollis of Fairfax, VA clan settled (30-40 miles).

To date, no researcher has been able to tie James Hollis to John Hollis and it is unlikely that they are closely related.  James appears to have been a British soldier who arrived at Charleston in 1780 with the 63rd Regiment of Foot but then deserted and joined the Patriots in 1781.

Children of James Hollis

1. James Hollis, Jr. - is said to have married Mary Ann Miller of Laurens District, SC; James died about 1835 and Mary then married James J. Harris.  James Harris and Mary Hollis Harris moved to Paulding County, Georgia.  James Harris was a Baptist Preacher.

Children of James Hollis, Jr. and Mary Ann Miller

1. John Washington Hollis - married Sarah Adair; Confederate soldier Co C, 2 Regiment GA State Troops

2. Margaret Mahala - married an ADAIR

3. Jane - married a HILL

4. Sarah A. Elizabeth - married a TUCKER and then possibly a LAND

5. James Marion - said to have died in Laurens County, SC

2. Thomas Hollis - married Rachel Bobo (BeauxBeaux) the daughter of Soloman

3. William Hollis

A Wesley Hollis and a Willis Hollis are also likely descendants of James - Whether they are sons or grandson I do not know as I have not yet researched James' line completely.

Note that the widow of James Hollis, Jr. moved with her children and her new husband to Paulding County, Georgia sometime in the 1840s.  Her son John Washington Hollis later lived in the Pumpkinvine community of Paulding County, Georgia.  This area is just west of the present day town of Dallas and not too far from Douglasville which is where my great grandfather Hollis settled in the 1870s.  I have not found any connection with John Washington and my own Hollis family.  It is likely that they are not closely related and had no dealings with one another.
