Sarah - Widow of Prosser

Athens (GA) Gazette

Although this newspaper notice may seem humorous today, it provides a glimpse into the status or standing of most women during the time period.

Sarah Horton died on March 15, 1834.  Some of her estate documents can be found at the Jackson County Historical Society archives.  Her son Prosser Horton, Jr. and Elijah Oliver provided bond and Prosser was the executor of her estate.  Buyers were Zachariah Ethridge, John Randolph, John Watts, Adam Williamson and Alexander D. Ethridge.  Payments were made to Wm. Cowan and Jacob BraseltonJacob Braselton (Probably Jacob, Jr.) appears to have been one of the appraisers.

As noted, the last name of Sarah and the date and place of their marriage is not known.  The only known birth date for any of their children is Winifred (my ancestor - married William Clements) who was born in 1786 which likely places Prosser and Sarah's marriage in North Carolina before Prosser moved to Georgia.

Sarah's maiden name may have begun with the letter "K".  Her name is listed as Sarah K. Horton in a GA Land Lottery grant as a widow of a Revolutionary War soldier.
