During World War II, Zeb enlisted in the Marines at age 17. He was big for his age so no one doubted he was at least 18 - At the end of the war he was shown to be 6' 4" tall. He was with the 1st Med. Battalion, 1st Marine Division, Co. E. He was at Quadalcanal among other pacific battle locations. His Commanding Office, Don S. Knowlton was awarded the Legion of Merit as "Executive Officer of the 1st Medical Battalion during the seizure and occupation of Guadalcanal". Zeb was combat wounded at the island of New Britain (New Guinea) and was awarded the Purple Heart. The recent book and movie "Unbroken" describes some of the conditions during the pacific conflict.
