Variations of this name include Coombe, Coumbe, Cumbe and possibly McCombs. It is likely Anglo-Saxon in origin.
The author's Combs ancestors arrived in Georgia shortly after the end of the Revolutionary War. They appear to have lived in the Fairfield District of South Carolina (just east of Columbia) before moving to Georgia. Before they were in South Carolina, they were likely in Amelia County, Virginia.
